Green means go: emerald gem for May ladies

Sigh, we don’t know about you, but the captivating green of an emerald makes us want to run into the wild and roll on a lush grassy knoll. Ok, maybe that’s too much, but you have to admit that the distinct colour is calming and energising at the same time and has a way of making you slow down and smell the forest.

This jewel is a treasure among many and a few lucky ladies get to claim emeralds as their official birthstone! (Excuse us while we try not to turn green with envy…) That may be true, but we can all learn a few things from this gorgeous rock.

Lesson 1: Embrace your flaws

Emeralds are the only gem stone that naturally contain fissures (cracks), and are more brittle than other rocks, but still highly sought after because of their unique colouring.

These cracks within an emerald are sometimes described as jardin (French for garden), because of their mossy appearance.

Specific imperfections are also unique for each kind of emerald and are used to identify a particular stone. Remember that you can be a little broken, a little fragile, and still stunningly beautiful and precious. In fact, it can enhance your unique beauty.

Emeralds have always been worn by royalty and celebrities. In the first century BC the King of Egypt had an emerald engraved with the portrait of the great Roman general, Lucullus, as a gift. A little extravagant, but he seemed to like it!

Alexander the Great wore a large emerald on his girdle. We get it, if you’re going to attack a nation in battle, at least look good doing it.
