Does Fine Jewellery Tarnish?

Real gold and sterling silver do tarnish. If you’ve noticed your memi jewellery has discoloured or turned black, this is not a manufacturing defect. Tarnishing is a natural process, but it can be easily reversed with regular cleaning. Memi offers a FREE tarnish removal service on all our jewellery.

What Causes Jewellery to Tarnish?

Exposure to air, moisture, or chemicals including perfumes, lotions, and cleaning agents. Skin acidity can also be a factor that can cause fine jewellery, sterling silver and 9k Gold to tarnish.

How to Remove Tarnish

We recommend using memi Jewellery Cleaner, but any certified jewellery cleaner will work. Use a soft jewellery cleaning cloth to avoid scratches.

  • DIY Method: Mix vinegar and baking soda. Soak jewellery for 2 hours, rinse under cold water, and dry with a soft cloth.
  • If unsuccessful, any jewellery store should be able to assist, alternatively you may return your item to us for a FREE refurbishment. You will however be responsible for the cost of delivery.

Tips to Prevent Tarnishing

  • Store your jewellery in a dry, clean place.
  • Avoid direct exposure to perfumes, lotions, and chemicals.
  • Remove jewellery when swimming in chlorinated pools or engaging in intense exercise.
  • Clean your jewellery regularly with a gentle cleaner.
